So he told her, ‘I have been ordered to fly this mission,’ and her first response was, ‘No!’ Because she knew how dangerous it was, and how many men never came back from the war, and that no one could ever retrieve their bodies, floating lifeless in space.
And he told her, ‘I’m doing it to protect you,’ but he knew it was bullshit, and he swore that he would resign the moment he came back, if he came back, but he didn’t say it, because she would say, ‘You said that the last time you went.’
He did, and he meant it, too, at the time. But what could he ever be if he couldn’t be a pilot?
